The ultimate snagging checklist

May 28, 2025

Buying a new build home should feel like a dream come true, but, even brand-new houses can come with flaws. That's why snagging is such an important step before you settle in. From cracked plaster to wonky doors, snags are small issues that can quickly become big frustrations if left unchecked.

In this post, we'll give you the ultimate snagging checklist, help you understand when and how to snag your home, and show you how SnaggedIt can make the whole process easier.

The ultimate snagging checklist for new build homes

What is snagging?

Snagging is the process of identifying defects, poor workmanship, or unfinished work in your new build home before you move in and during the first 2 years of your warranty period.

These can be cosmetic (like chipped paint or uneven tiling) or functional (like doors that don't close properly or radiators that don't heat evenly). Developers are typically responsible for fixing these snags, but only if you spot them and report them in time.

When should you do your snagging?

Ideally, snagging should happen before you complete the purchase (known as a pre-completion inspection). If that's not possible, you can still do it:

  • Immediately after getting the keys
  • During the first 2 years of your NHBC or warranty provider cover
  • At key stages, like before your 7 or 14-day developer check-ins

Using an app like SnaggedIt helps you capture snags when you need to.
